mp4 stuttering issues with PS3

Postby balufudus » Mon Apr 12, 2010 4:30 am

Hi all,
I purchased Playback about a month ago. I have both the PS3 and the xbox360 and am having loads of problems playing my mp4s on the PS3; the mp4s stutter a ton. On the xbox360, everything works fine.

Initially, the PS3 was wireless and I've tried everything. I have an Apple Time Machine (wireless N router) and the PS3 has been connected to my Mac via the PS3 internal wireless G, a wireless N gaming adapter, and wired. In all three cases, I got stuttering on the PS3.

The fact that this doesn't occur on the xbox (that's a wired connection), leads me to believe that there may be an issue with the PS3. Can anyone help or provide me any additional information?

Thanks.

This is a known issue with the PS3 and mp4 files. If you go wired, it should resolve the issue. The bug is with the PS3, not Playback.

Hello,

If you still see stuttering on a wired network then you may want to try updating your PS3 firmware. I've read that the latest update tweaks MP4 playback. This bug isn't mentioned specifically but it's worth a shot.

I actually do have the most recent firmware release. I thought that this would fix it but I'm still encountering issues.

Any other thoughts or things that I could try?

Ugh...

I'm new to this, but have this same issue. When I try wired it works fine - so far. But why is this fixed with wired & not wireless? Is there some sort of cache or spooling that happens with wired but not wireless? Most of my files are .m4v, and are unwatchable over wireless.

Hello,

The PS3 has a bug where it repeatedly asks for already-streamed chunks of an MP4 file over multiple simultaneous connections. This floods the network with unnecessary traffic and makes the video stutter on-screen. Wired works better because there's more bandwidth available. This is an MP4-specific bug and doesn't affect other files like AVIs or plain MPEGs.

So is there going to be a fix to this issue? If not, it kind of defeats the purpose in me purchasing Playback. I love the idea, but I'm not willing to run ethernet wires all over my house to get it to stop studdering.

Any other help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Xero,

I understand your frustration (I would feel the same way) but as Navdeep correctly points out above, this is a PS3 bug, not a Playback one. This is something that Sony has to address (soon hopefully) in a future firmware.
