Newbie questions.

Postby BeckyMalaria » Thu Jan 26, 2012 3:37 pm

Hello,

I'm trying to test out Sharetool before leaving for a trip tomorrow. I installed it on my home computer and am trying to connect to it from my work computer, where I am now.

When I choose Connect I get a list of Bonjour services. My computer name is listed twice. The first says Type: SSH, and the second says Windows File Sharing (It's a Mac, so I'm not sure why it says Windows file sharing.)

Double-clicking the SSH option gives me a Terminal login, which I don't know how to use. Double-clicking Windows File Sharing gives me a window to enter username and pword but then I get a Connection Failed: dialog stating there are no shares available on that network. I also get the same Connection Failed dialog when i try logging in as Guest.

I'm looking for access via the Finder, which I see in the screenshots, but isn't available in my Options list dropdown.

Was I supposed to enable anything further in my System Preferences Sharing Panel at home? I have Remote Login enabled, but I'm not sure what else.

The website mentions a manual, but I have been unable to find it. It isn't in the software I downloaded and I can't find it on the site either...

Apologies for the seriously naive questions!

On the machine that is the client (target), you have to go to System Preferences > Sharing and enable Screen Sharing (check it's check box). If you have two Macs at home, you can test it there.

As NovaScotian suggested, you'll also want to enable "Screen Sharing" and probably regular "File Sharing" as well.

For the latter, select the "File Sharing" section and then click on the "Options..." button. Enable the "Share files and folders using AFP" option.
